Official Statement on Cancellation
International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Cancels Annual Congress Due to Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy and Globally
A message from ISTH President Claire McLintock, M.D., and ISTH President-Elect Jeffrey Weitz, M.D.:
In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, we regretfully announce that the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) has canceled the XXVIII Congress of the ISTH, originally scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy from July 11-15, 2020. In lieu of an in-person scientific exchange, the ISTH will organize a virtual meeting to share the latest research and education.
As always, the health and safety of our attendees, partners, vendors and staff is our priority. For weeks, we have closely monitored updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, and have worked with our Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and local health authorities in Italy while thoroughly exploring all possible options. This decision comes after the number of COVID-19 cases in Italy, and elsewhere, have continue to escalate and increasing global travel restrictions have been put in place. We continue to stand in solidarity with our LOC, the Italian thrombosis and hemostasis community and the people of Italy during this particularly difficult time.
The ISTH would like to particularly recognize all of the individuals who have spent countless hours preparing for the ISTH 2020 Congress, specifically Congress Co-Chairs Flora Peyvandi, M.D., Ph.D., and Marco Cattaneo, M.D., as well as the LOC, Program Theme Leaders and members, industry supporters and the ISTH staff.

We know that many of our members and partners will be disappointed, and we share that sentiment. This was not a decision taken lightly. We have never cancelled an ISTH Congress in over 50 years since its inception, including our decision to continue with our ISTH 2011 Congress in Kyoto, Japan, after the devastating tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster. However, this is a unique crisis requiring an unprecedented response.
While still months away, we are making this decision to cancel ISTH 2020 now in order to provide clarity, diminish fears and to allow our members, attendees and partners to focus on combating the coronavirus pandemic in their respective communities.

Transitioning to a Virtual Congress
The ISTH remains fully committed to the continued support of the dissemination of science and education in thrombosis and hemostasis, and we are already planning an ISTH 2020 Virtual Congress experience that will enable us to deliver the latest thrombosis and hemostasis science, research and education to the global community in virtual format.
The ISTH 2020 Virtual Congress will offer a rich and robust program online that will focus on the highlights of the already prepared scientific and education program, with tools that will allow attendees to connect and participate.
As always, all submitted and accepted ISTH 2020 abstracts will be published online in the journal Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH) and can be presented – at a minimum – as e-posters. We will also still invite late-breaking abstracts.
The ISTH will share further detailed information about the virtual meeting format by the end of April, if not sooner, to provide participants, sponsors and partners with as much time as possible to plan accordingly.
Thank you for your patience as we navigate this rapidly evolving situation and strive to deliver the latest science and learning for the benefit of our patients.
A Communal Response to Crisis
As our community responds to this crisis, we stand together with thrombosis and hemostasis health care professionals and industry supporters. We commend those that are working to remedy this pandemic, and we support a united worldwide effort to share the latest resources relevant to this field and the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. As such, we are working on several aspects to make ISTH scientific and educational content widely available online. We will provide updates in the next few days.
We plan to return the ISTH Congress to Italy at the earliest possible opportunity. We also look forward to seeing our community, in-person at next year’s ISTH Congress scheduled for July 17-21, 2021, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. At ISTH 2021, we will hope to continue the tradition of in-person networking and presentation of groundbreaking science that will ultimately benefits patients around the world.
We are proud of the work of our members, partners and supporters who are on the front lines of response to this pandemic We urge everyone to stay safe during this crisis and do their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Sincerely and with best wishes,
Claire McLintock, ISTH President
Jeffrey Weitz, ISTH President-Elect
