FAQ on Cancellation of ISTH 2020

Please read the following Frequently Asked Questions regarding the ISTH 2020 Congress.

Why was the decision made to cancel the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan, Italy? 

The ISTH has been closely monitoring updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as the Italian health authorities related to the spread of COVID-19. We have also been actively following travel advisories and restrictions placed on health care providers, hospitals and institutions globally.

The health, safety and well-being of our attendees, members, faculty, staff, sponsors and exhibitors is of paramount importance. With an ever-increasing number of ISTH attendees on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, it is in the best interest of everyone to cancel the Congress to ensure our members are able to do what they do best – help and heal.


Will the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan be rescheduled for a later date in 2020? 

No, the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan, Italy, will not be rescheduled. 

The ISTH is currently organizing an ISTH 2020 Virtual Congress that will deliver a robust scientific and educational program to our stakeholders. Please see more details below. 

Registration, Travel and Hotel Information

Will my registration fee for the congress be refunded?

As a result of the cancellation of the Congress the ISTH will be waiving all cancellations fees to individuals, groups and exhibitors. A full refund will be given for all registration fees paid for the ISTH 2020 Congress.

How will I receive my refund?

For credit card payments, the full amount will be refunded to the credit card used to make the payment. The ISTH will process refunds within 30 days and the credit will be reflected on the following credit card billing statement.


For wire payments, an ISTH representative will reach out within 14 days to request bank information to refund the payment. After confirming bank account information, the funds will be wired and on the account within 30 days.

Will my accommodation fees be refunded if I booked through the ISTH official room block?

MiCodmc is the official housing partner of the ISTH 2020 Congress and will handle all requests for hotel refunds. These requests need to be directed to them through the contact information below and by the specified cancellation dates.  The ISTH is not responsible for any cancellation fees or penalties related to these transactions.  


MiCodmc Hotel Cancellation Policy


Please be advised that the following cancellation policy only applies to individual bookings and not to group bookings made through MiCodmc.


The MiCodmc are currently in the process of contacting all those who booked a hotel via the official site. The MiCodmc have informed the ISTH they will be offering individuals a voucher for a hotel stay in Milan or a full refund minus a €20.00 administrative fee. Please be aware the refund process will not begin until October. Please contact the MiCodmc accommodation team for further details: isth2020.hotel@micodmc.it


Will my flight be refunded?

Please contact your airline directly regarding ticket cancellations. The ISTH is not responsible for any cancellation fees or penalties related to these transactions.

Program Information

When will I know if my abstract was accepted and will it still be presented?

Abstract notifications will be sent to the presenting author in the coming weeks. As always, all submitted and accepted ISTH 2020 abstracts will be published online in the ISTH journal Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH) and can be presented – at a minimum – as e-posters. The presenting author will be provided further information with specific instructions as to how abstracts will be managed in the coming weeks. All embargoes and planned simultaneous publications will remain as scheduled. If you have questions about your abstract, please email abstracts@isth.org.


Will late-breaking abstracts still be accepted?

Yes, late-breaking abstracts will still be accepted and will be presented via the ISTH 2020 Virtual Congress. The late-breaking abstract submission website will open on May 20, 2020, and will close on June 3, 2020. Please see all abstract guidelines here. The ISTH will share further detailed information about the virtual meeting format by the end of April, if not sooner, to provide participants, sponsors and partners with as much time as possible to plan accordingly.


Will Travel Awards still be provided to abstract authors?

No, Travel Awards are specifically intended to assist with travel to the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan.


Will I still be able to give my invited talk?

All speakers will be contacted in the coming weeks with additional information and specific instructions on how your presentation may potentially be included in the ISTH 2020 Virtual Congress.
